future-proof skill: resourcefulness.

Imagine being confronted with a challenge. What is your initial reaction? If you feel uncertain about your ability to handle it, you are not alone.

But what if our perception of our skills is the only thing holding us back from approaching a challenge with confidence?

We don't have to be a "natural" at something to acquire a skill. Skills can develop because of our experiences and how we choose to engage with them.

But at times, our skillset can feel like the most random drag-and-drop scenario, shaped by other people's opinions or what's on our minds that day.

I've spent most of my life doubting my resourcefulness, but now I know that I am resourceful—and I believe we all are. The key is to boost our confidence and acknowledge our ability to handle tough situations.

This is the reason why I became a coach in the first place. I noticed that many of us do not acknowledge or appreciate our abilities, which leads to us being stuck in unfulfilling careers—preventing us from having a meaningful impact.

If you can relate to this, I encourage you to get in touch. Coaching provides a safe space for exploring and developing the skills you need to achieve your goals.

But let's circle back to resourcefulness—why is it such a gem of a skill to put into action (and how can it help you land a job)?

Why do companies value resourcefulness?

Companies finally got the memo that challenges are to be expected in this economy. An employee who confidently tackles these and creatively approaches problem-solving can be a game-changer. Those who proactively seek solutions outside the typical toolbox—whether it's through connecting with an inspiring network or brainstorming innovative approaches—can greatly impact a company's growth. Employees who recognize their own resourcefulness also tend to exude some extra confidence and optimism, which can have a contagious effect on team morale and create more opportunities for collaboration.

Why is resourcefulness good for you, too?

While being resourceful is helpful in overcoming challenges, being aware of your own resourcefulness is what truly makes the difference (if you’d like to know more about this, dip a toe into positive psychology and mindset theory—where the impact of self-awareness on behavior and outcome is thoroughly researched). Recognizing that you can approach struggles with different perspectives and tools and that your choices will impact the outcome can increase your confidence and resilience and ease your mind. So, more than just being a way to tackle issues, resourcefulness can change your whole perspective on life.

How can you embrace being resourceful?

It’s best if you prove it to yourself. Next time you stumble upon something challenging, try to unplug the autopilot and look at what’s available to you. Maybe you could reach out to your diverse network for a different perspective? Or apply that new tool you recently learned about? Or maybe it’s time to tap into some brainstorming or lateral thinking? Most importantly, try embracing a mindset of continuous learning and look at challenges as an opportunity to experiment with different resources and learn new skills—bit by bit, this will build your confidence in problem-solving and make it a habit to approach issues creatively.
